East Harlem Building Collapse
NEW
YORK—Three people died and at least two dozen were injured—including several
children—in a likely gas explosion that leveled two residential buildings in
East Harlem on Wednesday morning, officials said.
At
least nine people are unaccounted for, public safety officials said. New York
City Mayor Bill de Blasio cautioned that some of the missing may be “going
about their normal business” and weren’t in the building at the time of the
blast.
“There
will be a search through the rubble of the building as soon as the fire is put
out,” Mr. de Blasio said during a news conference at the scene, near East 116th
Street and Park Avenue.
“This
is a tragedy of the worst kind because there was no indication in time to save
people,” he added.
So
far, there were two people with life-threatening injuries, five with serious
but non-life-threatening injuries, and 20 with minor injuries at four local
hospitals, a Fire Department of New York spokesman said
.
