Pit Bull Who Mauled Child Sentenced To Life In Jail

Image
A pit bull who mauled a Phoenix, Arizona, boy has been sentenced to spend his life at a no-kill shelter operated from a jail run by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Judge Deborah Griffith carried out the sentencing Tuesday, ruling that the dog, named Mickey, should spend the rest of his life living at the shelter, AZ Central reported. On Feb. 20, 4-year-old Kevin Vicente was mauled by his babysitter's pit bull, leaving him with a broken eye socket and jaw. Newsday reported that the little boy has months, and possibly years, of reconstructive surgery ahead of him. Animal rights activists came to the defense of the dog and shared Mickey's image online hoping to save the dog's life. On social media, the topic divided those who felt Mickey should be euthanized and those who thought life in a shelter would be more humane. Along with spending the rest of his life in a shelter -- unable to be adopted or fostered -- the pit bull was also defanged (remov

China denies church demolition is persecution of Christians

Image
A massive church was razed to the ground this week in Wenzhou, a coastal Chinese city nicknamed the "Jerusalem of the East" for its large Christian population. Local officials responsible for the demolition say the church was an illegal structure that was four times the permitted structure size. But Christian groups are concerned that the demolition signals an official campaign against religious organizations. The Sanjiang Church took 12 years and 30 million yuan ($4.7 million) to build, reports Chinese media. Its soaring spires were a symbol of worship in a city that is fifteen percent Christian. The church's demolition on Monday was preceded by a month-long standoff between supporters of the church and local authorities, with supporters occupying the church to protest its destruction. The church was originally a government-approved project under the official "Three-Self Patriotic Movement," a state-sanctioned Protestant church. Last September it was l

Florida jail blast: 2 dead, dozens injured, 3 missing

Image
Three inmates are missing and two are known dead following a powerful explosion that ripped through the Escambia County Jail in Florida's Panhandle, Sheriff David Morgan said Thursday. The inmates could be dead inside the jail or they might have escaped in the chaos following the blast, Morgan said. Deputies haven't been able to get far enough inside the structurally-unsound building to look for the inmates in the wake of what may have been a natural gas explosion late Wednesday night, he said. "It's pretty much complete destruction inside this facility. It was a huge explosion," he said. Morgan said they hope to begin exploring the jail soon and provide an update Thursday evening. Morgan's statements contradicted earlier word from county spokeswoman Kathleen Castro, who told reporters that deputies had made two sweeps through the building. The explosion in the medium-security facility happened near the jail's booking area, Castro told reporters s

Turkey bans May Day rallies, uses tear gas, water cannon on demonstrators

Turkish security forces barricaded the commercial center of Istanbul in an attempt to stop May Day celebrations from taking place in the city's iconic Taksim Square. Police fired plastic pellets and used tear gas and water cannon in an attempt to disperse May Day demonstrators who tried to defy the ban and reach the city center. Protesters responded by throwing stones and bottles and shooting fireworks at riot police. Similar clashes erupted in the Turkish capital Ankara and the port city of Izmir. Turkish authorities went to great lengths to prevent people from gathering in Istanbul, Turkey's largest city. Citing security threats by extremist groups, the government shut Istanbul's subway system, stopped many commercial ferry services between the European and Asian halves of the city, and blocked vehicular traffic on some of Istanbul's busiest roads. "Intelligence units have received information that illegal terrorist organizations and their extensions are

Missing Alaska man found dead in his home after a year

Image
An Alaska man missing for more than a year was found dead in his home on Monday, according to Anchorage Police. The home had been occupied by renters for nearly a year, but they apparently had no idea the body was in the home, police said. Samuel E. McAlpine, 37, was last seen March 17, 2013, when he told his mother he was going on a date. McAlpine's sister reported him missing 12 days later, Anchorage Police spokeswoman Dani Myren said. Family members weren't initially concerned, because he "frequently disappears for weeks at a time" said an e-mail sent by police in August asking for the public's help in finding McAlpine. McAlpine was going through a divorce at the time and had moved out of the home he shared with his now ex-wife, Myren said. "They were unable to sell the home, so she rented it out to tenants." Those tenants moved in to the McAlpine home around April 1, 2013, and recently moved out. Myren said McAlpine's ex-wife, Christine
