CHRIS BROWN TO STAY BEHIND BARS

Image
Chris Brown has been ordered to stay in jail for at least another week. Lawyers acting for the 24-year-old singer appealed for him to be allowed out of prison yesterday, but Jude Victor Greenberg denied the request until a probation revocation hearing takes place on May 1. Chris is standing trial for misdemeanour assault charges for allegedly hitting a fab by the name of Parker Adams and breaking his nose. Chris' arrest for the assault, which took place in Washington DC in October marked a violation of the probation which was set in 2009 following his assault on then-girlfriend Rihanna, but he was allowed to enter rehab rather than prison. However, when he was kicked out of the clinic for rule breaking, he was subsequently jailed and his lawyer argued it was unfair he had been in prison for 39 days without a hearing. If convicted, the entertainer faces a maximum of six months in jail and $US1,000 fine ($1,163), but he also faces up to four more years in jail in Califor

The beleaguered Canadian pop star hit a bump upon his return to the United States after touching down at LAX today on an Air Singapore flight from Tokyo. Eyewitnesses tell E! News that U.S. Customs officials have been questioning the 20-year-old for the last two hours inside the airport's Tom Bradley International Terminal. Bieber's entourage has been standing around waiting for him Since being charged with driving under the influence in Miami in January, Bieber has traveled abroad, having immediately jetted off to Panama for some R&R after his Florida arrest. He is also facing an assault charge in his native Canada in connection with an alleged attack on a limo driver in Toronto back in December. Bieber was also briefly detained while traveling from Canada to New Jersey for Super Bowl festivities in February. Bryan Singer's accuser sues three Hollywood executives

Image
The attorney for the man accusing "X-Men" director Bryan Singer of sexual abuse has filed additional, similar cases against three Hollywood executives. Garth Ancier, David Neuman and Gary Goddard were named in three separate complaints, filed by attorney Jeff Herman in Hawaii, accusing them of sexually abusing Michael F. Egan III. Last week, Singer was accused in a federal lawsuit of drugging and sexually assaulting Egan in the 1990s. Ancier is a prominent television executive who has held senior positions at Fox and NBC. Neuman is a former senior Walt Disney television executive. Goddard is the founder of a firm that designs theme park attractions, hotels and resorts and produces live shows. They could not immediately be reached for comment. An attorney for Singer has called the lawsuit against his client "absurd and defamatory." The lawsuit against Singer filed on behalf of Egan claims that Egan was forced into a "sordid sex ring" in the entertai

Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter, boxer wrongly convicted of murder, dies

Image
Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, the middleweight boxing contender who spent 19 years in prison after being wrongly convicted of a triple murder, has died in Toronto, according to Win Wahrer, the director of client services for the Association in Defence of the Wrongly Convicted. Carter, 76, died of complications from prostate cancer, Wahrer said. "I always remember spending hours and hours with Rubin talking about the wrongful convictions," she told CNN. "He was a great mentor and teacher. I felt very fortunate to have those times with him. ... He lived a very full life." Carter spent 19 years in prison for a triple killing in New Jersey before a federal judge ruled in 1985 that he and John Artis, who was with Carter on the night of the shootings, did not receive fair trials and released them. Artis was with Carter when he died early Sunday morning, Wahrer said, adding that Carter had lived in Toronto since his release from prison. Carter told CNN three

Teen hitches ride to Hawaii in jet's landing gear -- and lives to tell the tale

As unlikely as it sounds, officials believe the boy rode in a tiny, cramped compartment for almost five hours, at altitudes that reached 38,000 feet, without oxygen and in subzero temperatures. "It sounds really incredible," said aviation expert Jeff Wise. "Being in a wheel well is like all of a sudden being on top of Mount Everest." Between the oxygen depletion and the cold, life expectancy "is measured in minutes," Wise said. But some people have survived. Since 1947, 105 people are known to have attempted to fly inside wheel wells on 94 flights worldwide, the Federal Aviation Administration's Civil Aerospace Medical Institute says. Of those, 25 made it through, including a 9-year-old child -- a survival rate of 24%. One of the flights went as high as 39,000 feet. Two others were at 38,000 feet. The conditions at high altitudes can put stowaways in a virtual "hibernative" state, the FAA said. Someone could slip into unconsciousness s

Marshal kills Utah gang defendant who rushed court witness, feds say

Image
A U.S. marshal fatally shot a defendant in a Utah federal courtroom Monday morning after he rushed at a witness as his trial began, officials said. Siale Angilau, an alleged gang member charged with racketeering conspiracy, was shot several times at a Salt Lake City federal courthouse after Angilau attacked someone who was on the witness stand, Judge Tena Campbell said in a court document about the incident. He later died at a hospital after being shot in the chest, the FBI said in a news release. "There were people yelling at him, telling him to stop, and he just didn't stop," Sara Josephson, who was in the courtroom, told CNN affiliate KSTU. "He kept going forward with his furiousness." The station quoted FBI Special Agent in Charge Mark Dressen, who said Angilau grabbed a pen and charged a witness. "I believe he was shot in the chest multiple times," Dressen told KSTU. People were ducking behind benches, Perry Caldwell told the station. He s

Indian surgeons find 12 gold bars in man's stomach

Image
When a team of Indian surgeons opened up the stomach of a patient complaining of abdominal pain, they had no idea they'd extract a fortune. The patient, whose name was not released, was hiding 12 gold bars in his belly. He apparently smuggled them into India to evade import duty, police and doctors said Tuesday. Each bar weighed 33 grams, said C.S. Ramachandran, who conducted the surgery at a hospital in New Delhi on April 9. The 63-year-old patient, an Indian citizen, visited the hospital a day before with severe stomach pain and nausea. "He told us he had accidentally swallowed the cap of a plastic bottle," Ramachandran said. Investigations could not confirm his claim. "We couldn't (either) make out they were gold bars," the doctor said. "But yes, X-Rays showed there was intestinal blockage, which required surgery." On the day of surgery, stunned doctors pulled out the yellow metal from his stomach. "It was unexpected," Ramac

W’Bank approves $250m for water supply in Nigeria

Image
The World Bank has approved a credit facility of $250m from the International Development Association to help the Nigerian government to increase access to water supply services and to improve the financial and management viability of existing utilities. The bank disclosed this in a statement made available to our correspondent in Abuja on Monday. According to the bank, the funds will target the poor urban population living in state capitals and their surroundings, and will benefit some two million people. It said that the credit would support the Third National Urban Water Sector Reform Project and respond to the Federal Government’s goal of developing more effective mechanisms for social service delivery, particularly water service, as a means of addressing inequality in income and opportunities. The funds would help to rehabilitate and build the water delivery infrastructure and institutional systems needed to expand access to water supply services for people in selected c

She said the parents of 230 girls had reported them missing but that 40 had managed to escape from the insurgents. The 190 figure is far more than   the 77 given earlier by government officials. The Associated Press had reported that parents of the pupils of Government Secondary School, Chibok told Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima when he visited on Monday, that 234 girls were abducted. When news first emerged of the kidnap last Tuesday, initial reports said more than 200 students were abducted, but state officials said the correct figure was about 130. The students, aged between 16 and 18 were about to sit their final year exami
